Mayors from different cities worldwide will gather at the Fourth Global Meeting of Mayors on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Quito, Ecuador.
Cities are home to most of the world’s population, so they often serve as the primary point of contact between governments and their people.
While cities are known for innovation, creativity, and progress, they are also where multiple crises have emerged in recent years, ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to social inequality, water scarcity, climate change, conflict, migration, and forced displacement.
Additionally, cities have a significant role to play in advancing gender equality, empowering women, and addressing the problem of violence against women.
Sexual harassment and other forms of violence against women and girls are rampant in public spaces worldwide, such as transportation, streets, libraries, markets, and online platforms. A study conducted across multiple countries found that six in ten women believed that sexual harassment had worsened in public since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
On 28 November 2023, mayors from different cities around the world will gather at the Fourth Global Meeting of Mayors on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Quito, Ecuador. The meeting is co-organized by UN Women and the City of Quito and supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
