The University of Tokyo has selected Professor Yoko Fujigaki, 64, as its next president, making her the first woman to lead the prestigious Japanese university.
Fujigaki will begin her six-year term on April 1 next year, succeeding current President Teruo Fujii.
An Academic Career at the University of Tokyo
Fujigaki graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo in 1985. She became a professor at the university’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2010.
Her academic specialization includes science and technology studies and scientometrics, the study of the measurement and analysis of scientific research. She has also served as an adviser to the university president and as an executive vice president.
How Fujigaki Was Selected
The university said its Presidential Selection and Oversight Committee selected Fujigaki following a comprehensive assessment that included interviews, statements of intent submitted by candidates and voting results.
The selection was based on previously announced criteria for the university’s next president. These included a high level of integrity and ethical standards, outstanding academic knowledge, an international perspective and the ability to implement initiatives.
Fujigaki’s appointment marks a historic milestone for the University of Tokyo, as she will become the institution’s first female president.
