Vodafone Egypt has been slapped with a hefty fine of EGP 20.5 million following a disruptive service outage. On Tuesday, March 5, Vodafone users across Cairo prompted widespread complaints on social media. With a customer base of 47.7 million, the outage caused significant inconvenience and frustration.
The disruption primarily affected the 4G network, leading some users to switch to 3G as a temporary solution to regain cell service. This incident highlighted potential issues with the fourth-generation VOLTE network coverage.
Vodafone Egypt swiftly took action to restore all services, successfully resolving the situation within five hours. The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt promptly formed an emergency technical committee to investigate the causes of the malfunction, assess the impact on users, determine the duration of the outage, and identify the affected areas.
In compliance with the user rights, as set by NETRA’s protective rules , Vodafone took measures to compensate its users by providing free minutes and megabytes. On March 7, the NTRA announced that Vodafone Egypt would be required to pay a fine of EGP 20.5 million. This fine is set under provisions of escalating penalties in cases of service interruptions. The authority emphasized the importance of implementing corrective actions to ensure uninterrupted service provision and prevent future network failures.
