UN Security Council to Vote on Algeria’s Demand for Humanitarian Ceasefire in Gaza Tonight

News Agencies

The UN Security Council (UNSC) will vote on a draft resolution tonight that calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Algeria initially put forth the proposal two weeks ago, and the vote comes amid escalating tensions in the region.

The Egyptian state firmly supports the call for a ceasefire. The country is particularly concerned about Israeli ground operations near Rafah in southern Gaza, which could worsen the already dire humanitarian situation for Palestinians.

For the resolution to be adopted, it must receive at least nine votes in favor without facing vetoes from key members such as the United States, Britain, France, China, or Russia.

On her part, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield has expressed concerns that adopting a resolution could put at risk the delicate negotiations to pause hostilities.

She further emphasized that the United States does not support the current draft resolution, saying: If it were to come up for a vote as drafted, it will not be adopted.

On his part, US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said Monday that passing a resolution for ceasefire could put ongoing delicate diplomatic negotiations at risk, which may result in the release of hostages from Gaza.

The United States has proposed an alternate draft that includes the term “ceasefire” but does not demand an immediate halt to hostilities. The US has previously vetoed two drafts in October and December that called for a ceasefire and is expected to repeat the action this time as well.
