Saudi Arabia inaugurated the “International Conference on Women in Islam” in Jeddah yesterday. The conference has been organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and will take place under the auspices of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz.

The three-day conference aims to highlight the successes of Muslim women, acknowledge their role and contribution to development, address any suspicions and misunderstandings that detract from women’s rights in Islam, and emphasize that Islamic teachings have always been fair to women.

The upcoming conference aims to create a plan for legal and political changes that will promote justice and empowerment of women in Muslim societies. The conference will also result in the adoption of a comprehensive document titled “Jeddah Document on Women in Islam”.

The conference comprises five working sessions discussing women’s rights and their place in Islam, prospects for empowering Muslim women in education and employment, and various women’s issues in contemporary societies, attended by ministers, officials, scientists, and intellectuals.

During the 49th Session of the Meeting of the Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of Islamic States held in Mauritania’s capital, Nouakchott, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Saudi Foreign Minister, proposed an initiative to host the International Conference on Women in Islam. This initiative demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting the status and empowerment of women in all areas of development.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has played a crucial role in supporting the objectives of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and its efforts to safeguard the rights of Muslim women and enhance their role in the development of Member States.
