Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development, revealed that the Egyptian National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture, under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has nominated the governorates of Giza and Menoufia for membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for the year 2025. This nomination follows their selection for receiving the highest votes from members of the national committee. Dr. Awad emphasized that, in line with UNESCO’s regulations, only two governorates are chosen per cycle for this network.
The Minister highlighted that the nomination of Giza and Menoufia is a recognition of their rich creative and cultural potential. Giza has been nominated for its contributions to the film industry and creative sectors, owing to its long cinematic history, which includes prominent Egyptian cinema studios and numerous movie theaters. This recognition underscores Giza’s role as a significant hub for the film industry in Egypt.
On the other hand, Menoufia has been nominated in the field of crafts and folk arts, in acknowledgment of its rich cultural heritage, particularly in the city of Ashmun, which is known for its traditional crafts such as handwoven carpets, pottery, and ceramics. The preservation and promotion of these crafts have long been an integral part of the region’s cultural identity.
Dr. Awad further explained that in December of the previous year, she held a virtual meeting with all governors, which was attended by Dr. Nuria Sanz, the Director of the UNESCO Cairo Office. The meeting aimed to introduce the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and provide necessary information on the procedures for applying for membership. The Minister reiterated the importance of creativity as a driving force for development in all aspects of life, noting that many governorates expressed interest in applying for membership, demonstrating the widespread enthusiasm for the initiative.
The UNESCO Creative Cities Network includes cities that regard creativity and cultural industries as fundamental elements of their urban development. The network aims to promote international cooperation among cities that utilize creativity as a tool for sustainable development, contributing to the growth and prosperity of their local communities.
Through this nomination, Egypt continues to highlight the significance of creativity and cultural heritage in driving economic and social development, further cementing the country’s commitment to innovation and cultural exchange. The inclusion of Giza and Menoufia in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network would represent a milestone in the growth of Egypt’s cultural landscape and its role on the international stage.
