Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt- Christian Berger- paid a visit to the Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Company in Alexandria. Berger signified wastewater treatment, highlighting the EU’s support for 100 water treatment plants in Egypt. He noted the significance of investments in establishing water infrastructure and generating employment opportunities.
Berger emphasized the EU’s commitment to providing assistance; considering the significance and support the bloc dedicated to the water sector. Over the past decade, the EU has allocated approximately half a billion euros to support water-related initiatives in Egypt.

Holding Company for Potable Water and Wastewater Chairman, Mamdouh Raslan, stressed the long-standing EU-Egypt relationship. Raslan urged cooperation with European companies in water treatment at the Delta, Upper Egypt, and Alexandria. They are developing technologies to enhance energy efficiency in wastewater treatment plants, with around 40% of Egypt’s industrial establishments located in Alexandria.
Amb. Christian Berger was accompanied by ambassadors from EU member states and diplomats on a tour in Alexandria and Kafr El-Sheikh governorates. The purpose of the tour is to inspect water and sanitation projects that receive financing from the European Union.
The tour commenced with a visit to the Smouha wastewater treatment plant in western Alexandria, followed by a meeting between Ambassador Berger and the Governor of Alexandria, Mohamed El-Sherif.
Amb. Berger, along with European ambassadors and diplomats, participated in the opening of the European Union dialogue on water with the private and local businessmen in Alexandria. They engaged in the “Egypt Water” dialogue with young entrepreneurs and water ambassadors.
The expansion program for the wastewater network in western Alexandria aims to enhance the capacity and efficiency levels of an existing wastewater treatment plant. This initiative strives to enhance the environment, support sustainable economic development, promote urban resilience, and contribute to climate-related activities. The European Investment Bank allocates a relevant project worth EUR 184.75 million a long-term loan, along with an investment grant of EUR 20 million from the European Union, and Egyptian contributions.
