The Egyptian Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, chaired by Representative Tarek Radwan, convened a crucial meeting yesterday focused on enhancing child rights protection. The committee’s discussions centered on safeguarding children from violence, exploitation, and discrimination, while ensuring access to education and healthcare.
Dr. Sahar Al-Senbathy, Chairwoman of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, also attended the session. During the meeting, Representative Radwan called for a review and strengthening of national legislation related to child and motherhood rights, ensuring alignment with international agreements such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child. He emphasized the importance of enacting or amending laws that protect children from abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
In her presentation, Dr. Al-Senbathy outlined the pivotal role of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood in promoting child welfare. She highlighted the council’s commitment to implementing comprehensive strategies aimed at fulfilling child rights as outlined by international conventions, with a particular focus on the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Dr. Al-Senbathy further discussed the council’s efforts to protect children from all forms of violence—physical, psychological, and sexual—as well as economic exploitation and human trafficking. The council operates mechanisms such as the Child Helpline, allowing children or their families to report violations or threats to their safety. She also noted the council’s ongoing community awareness programs aimed at combating harmful practices, including child labor and early marriage.
This meeting underscores Egypt’s commitment to upholding and improving child protection standards in line with international norms and human rights frameworks.
