According to officials at metro stations, Egypt’s transport ministry increased the cost of metro tickets on Monday, January 1, 2024, by up to 20%.
The price of tickets increased from 5 pounds to 6 Egyptian pounds ($0.19) for rides up to 9 stations, 8 pounds to 7 pounds for rides up to 16 stations, and 12 pounds to 10 pounds for rides up to 23 stations.
The ministry stated that a new class of tickets was newly established for journeys lasting more than 23 stops, which will cost 15 pounds.
In Egypt, headline inflation was 34.6% in the year ending in November. The Cairo metro system, primarily used by citizens with lower incomes, has historically operated at a deficit. There are currently three operational lines in the system, which the government has been progressively lengthening.
