A community-driven initiative in Egypt’s southern governorate of Aswan is demonstrating how traditional craftsmanship can become a powerful engine for women’s economic empowerment and sustainable local development.
The Balana Handicrafts Complex, located in Nasr El Nuba, is expanding opportunities for Nubian women by combining vocational training, heritage preservation, and income generation in line with Egypt Vision 2030 and the governorate’s long-term development strategy.
Supporting Sustainable Development Through Traditional Crafts
The operation of the complex is being closely monitored by the local authorities as part of directives issued by Major General Amr Lashin, Governor of Aswan, to strengthen sustainable development initiatives that improve livelihoods while preserving the region’s unique cultural identity.
According to Mohamed Abdel Aziz, Head of the Nasr El Nuba Local Unit, the municipality continues to support heritage-based industries that protect Nubian traditions while creating sustainable employment opportunities for local communities.
Preserving Nubian Heritage Through Skilled Craftsmanship
During a field visit, Yehia Abdel Fattah, Head of the Balana Village Local Unit, reviewed the complex’s production activities and available facilities. The center has become an important hub for preserving and revitalizing Nubian handicrafts while contributing to economic and social development across the villages of Nubia.
The complex hosts specialized workshops covering a wide range of traditional crafts, including sewing, leatherwork, palm fiber and palm frond products, embroidery, crochet, and handmade beadwork. Preparations are also underway to launch a dedicated workshop for producing handwoven carpets and kilim rugs, further strengthening efforts to safeguard Nubia’s rich artisanal heritage for future generations.
Creating New Economic Opportunities for Nubian Women
Beyond preserving cultural traditions, the Balana Handicrafts Complex serves as an important platform for training and equipping Nubian women with practical vocational skills that can generate sustainable income.
By providing professional training, hands-on production experience, and opportunities for entrepreneurship, the initiative helps women increase household income, achieve greater economic independence, and participate more actively in local development.
