Egypt’s Environment Ministry Reviews Environmental Impact Study for Akhbar Al Youm International School Project

Mona Yousef

As part of Egypt’s ongoing monitoring of the environmental impacts of major development projects, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Dr. Manal Awad met with Islam Afifi, Chairman of the Board of the Akhbar Al Youm Foundation, to review the latest updates on the environmental study for the foundation’s proposed international school project.

The meeting, held within the framework of strengthening environmental governance and sustainable development, was attended by Eng. Nesreen Baz, Head of the Environmental Management Sector; Dr. Iman Qurni, Chief Executive Officer of the implementing company; and members of the project’s advisory and consulting team.

Strategic Environmental Planning for Sustainable Development

Dr. Awad emphasized the importance of cooperation with long-established national media institutions such as Akhbar Al Youm, particularly in development initiatives aimed at building a resilient and well-informed new generation capable of understanding environmental challenges and contributing to practical solutions.

She highlighted that Akhbar Al Youm plays a vital role as a strategic partner in raising environmental awareness among citizens and encouraging environmentally responsible behavior that protects natural resources and supports climate resilience.

During the meeting, the minister reviewed the progress made on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) model for the international school project. The discussions concluded with agreement on commissioning a comprehensive environmental impact study through an accredited environmental consultancy. The study will address potential implementation challenges, including emissions levels, noise pollution, and the environmental impact of surrounding activities in the project area.

Site Inspection and Compliance With Environmental Standards

Dr. Awad directed the formation of an urgent joint committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Environment, the Educational Buildings Authority, and the project’s implementing company. The committee will conduct an on-site inspection and oversee the preparation of a detailed environmental impact assessment by an approved environmental consultant.

The project will receive environmental approval only after confirming full compliance with national environmental standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring that appropriate mitigation measures are in place.

Commitment to Environmental Impact Assessments

The Acting Minister of Environment stressed that preparing environmental studies prior to launching any development activity or project is essential to ensure harmony with the surrounding environment and existing land uses. Such measures, she noted, are critical to preserving natural resources and safeguarding environmental quality for current and future generations.

Dr. Awad reaffirmed that the Ministry of Environment remains committed to conducting strategic environmental impact assessments that integrate environmental, social, and economic dimensions, reinforcing Egypt’s broader goals of sustainable development and responsible urban growth.
