Ain Shams University has announced the appointment of Prof. Dr. Suzan Youssef Ahmed Keliny, Professor Emeritus of Media, as the new Media Advisor to the University President, effective December 1, 2025. The decision, issued by University President Prof. Dr. Mohamed Diaa Zain Al-Abidin, marks the return of one of the institution’s most influential academic figures to a position she previously held with distinction.
Her academic path began at Cairo University, where she graduated from the Department of Broadcasting in 1982. She continued to advance rapidly in academia, becoming an assistant lecturer in 1986, earning her doctorate with first-class honors in 1990, and achieving full professorship by 2000.
Her association with Ain Shams University began in 1998 when she joined the Faculty of Arts and went on to establish the Department of Media. She led the department until 2009, laying the structural and academic foundations for media education at the university. Her leadership expanded further when she headed the Department of Communication and Media Sciences in 2014, and between 2015 and 2019, she served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts, during which she oversaw major institutional and academic modernization projects, including the design of an electronic-media program for the university’s Open Education Center.
Her influence extended well beyond Egypt’s borders when she became Dean of the College of Media at Liwa University in the United Arab Emirates from 2019 to 2022, strengthening regional media-education networks and contributing to academic program development across the Gulf.
Throughout her career, Prof. Dr. Keliny has held numerous prestigious advisory roles. She previously served as Media Advisor to the Speaker of the People’s Assembly from 2004 to 2010, and later as Media Advisor to the Ministry of Health and Population in 2015, where she also directed the ministry’s Media Center. Her expertise has been recognized by a wide range of national bodies: she became an expert in media affairs for the Arab Labor Organization in 2015, a member of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation in its first formation in 2017, and a member of the Media Committee of the Supreme Council of Culture. Her long-standing engagement with the National Council for Women includes chairing its Media Committee, a role through which she has championed women’s representation and rights within public communication. More recently, she was named Chair of the Supreme Advisory Board of the African Asian Union for Women—an indicator of her growing regional footprint.
As a scholar, Prof. Dr. Keliny has produced an extensive body of academic work. She has authored fifteen books, more than twenty-three scientific monographs, over forty peer-reviewed studies published in international journals, and more than twenty-five additional research papers. Her mentorship record is equally impressive, having supervised more than one hundred master’s and doctoral theses and taken part in the examination of over one hundred twenty dissertations. Her academic influence extends internationally: she has participated in more than thirty scientific conferences across Egypt and in several Arab countries, including Lebanon and Tunisia.
Prof. Dr. Keliny’s contributions also reflect a strong commitment to civic engagement. She has been a leading voice in national awareness campaigns addressing women’s rights, violence against women, youth well-being, public health communication, and the ethical responsibilities of media in the digital era. Through these efforts, she has shaped public discourse on issues of social justice and responsible media practice.
Her re-appointment as Media Advisor to the President of Ain Shams University signals a renewed emphasis on strengthening the university’s strategic communication, enhancing its public presence, and reinforcing its engagement with national and regional institutions.
