At the 2025 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt’s Minister of Planning and Economic Development, held pivotal meetings with South African and Pakistani government officials, reinforcing Egypt’s commitment to strengthening global economic cooperation.
Strengthening Ties with South Africa
Dr. Al-Mashat met with South African ministers from Finance, Trade, and Energy, focusing on bilateral cooperation amid Africa’s ongoing development challenges. Discussions included South Africa’s 2025 G20 presidency, with the Minister highlighting the critical need for global financial system reforms and greater integration across Africa to support sustainable growth.
“Reforming the global financial architecture is vital to overcoming the compounded crises affecting African nations,” Al-Mashat stated, also emphasizing Egypt’s role in BRICS and the New Development Bank to advance South-South cooperation.
Expanding Relations with Pakistan
With Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Dr. Al-Mashat explored opportunities to deepen bilateral economic ties, underscoring Egypt’s commitment to enhancing relations with developing nations. The talks also reviewed outcomes from the 2024 Developing Eight Summit, hosted by Egypt.
Noting the 77th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Pakistan, Al-Mashat expressed interest in fostering joint economic projects, particularly in sectors aligned with Egypt’s ongoing reforms and infrastructure development.
Focus on Inclusive Growth and Investment
Throughout her discussions, Al-Mashat emphasized Egypt’s broad reform agenda, focusing on infrastructure and private-sector investment opportunities. “Egypt remains committed to driving inclusive growth and attracting investment to close development gaps,” she affirmed.
