Shell Egypt and Partners Launch Red Sea Initiative to Protect Coral Reefs

News Agencies

Shell Egypt, in collaboration with Mubadala Energy, Woodside Energy, Tharwa, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ganoub El Wadi Petroleum Holding Company (Ganope), and the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA), has launched a groundbreaking initiative to protect the region’s coral reefs in the Red Sea. The project aims to safeguard these vibrant ecosystems by enhancing mooring systems to prevent damage from various human activities.

A Milestone in Environmental Stewardship

Under the patronage of H.E. Engineer Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment; and Major General Amr Hanafi, Governor of the Red Sea, the launch of the project marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s ongoing efforts toward sustainable development and environmental protection.

The initiative’s first phase will focus on improving mooring systems at key locations, including Abu Dabab Reef, Abu Kizan Reef, and Malahi Reef. The installation of up to 31 eco-friendly mooring buoys, known locally as “shamandurat,” will help prevent random anchoring that causes irreparable damage to coral reefs.

A Commitment to Sustainability

This initiative underscores Shell Egypt’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development and the preservation of Egypt’s natural resources. As part of its broader social investment strategy, Shell and its partners have teamed up with Ganope and HEPCA to conduct an environmental needs assessment for the Red Sea. The findings of this assessment revealed the urgent need for actions to protect the region’s coral reefs, which are not only an ecological treasure but also a vital source of income through national tourism.

The Red Sea attracts over 200,000 visitors annually to its remote reefs and islands. This constant influx of tourists has placed immense pressure on the delicate marine ecosystems, risking severe environmental degradation. If left unaddressed, this could threaten both marine biodiversity and the tourism sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Supporting Long-Term Sustainability

Dalia Elgabry, VP & Country Chair of Shell Egypt, emphasized the company’s dedication to impactful social investment: “The Red Sea initiative is a key component of Shell Egypt’s commitment to sustainability. By protecting Egypt’s coral reefs, we are safeguarding a vital economic resource and supporting the long-term health of our planet. This project exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships in driving meaningful change and advancing global sustainability goals.”

Collaboration for Greater Impact

The Red Sea initiative showcases the potential of collaborative efforts between the private sector, government, and civil society organizations. This partnership is aligned with the Ministry of Petroleum’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy.
