Egypt and the Dominican Republic held their inaugural round of political consultations on Wednesday, focusing on bolstering cooperation in political, economic, and cultural spheres. The virtual meeting, which took place approximately six months after the two countries signed an agreement to establish a mechanism for such discussions, was led by Egypt’s Assistant Foreign Minister for American Affairs, Sameh Aboul-Enein, and the Dominican Republic’s Director for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Department, Ricardo David Ruiz Cepeda.
As per a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the consultations centered on enhancing trade, increasing mutual investments, and intensifying high-level visits to deepen the bilateral relationship. Aboul-Enein expressed Egypt’s keen interest in strengthening cooperation with the Dominican Republic in various sectors, including migration issues and tourism.
The two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual interest, such as the Palestinian cause, developments in Sudan, and political changes in Latin America. Cepeda emphasized his country’s eagerness to maintain coordination with Egypt on Middle East developments, acknowledging Egypt’s pivotal role in the region.
Both delegations agreed to continue consulting and coordinating on issues of mutual interest, particularly concerning shared regional threats like illegal immigration and terrorism. This round of talks is part of a broader Egyptian effort to activate Egyptian-Latin American relations across various fields, as emphasized in the statement.
