Mpox is not the new COVID, says WHO official

A World Health Organization official highlighted that Mpox, whether old or new strain, is not equivalent to COVID-19 because its spread is under control. Authorities are aware of the precautions that must be taken to prevent its spread.

“We can and must tackle mpox together,” said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, during a media briefing.

“So will we choose to put the systems in place to control and eliminate mpox globally? Or will we enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the coming years will prove a critical test for Europe and the world,” he added.

Mpox, a viral infection causing pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is generally mild but can be deadly in some cases. The clade 1b variety of mpox has caused global concern due to its seemingly more effortless transmission through routine close contact. Recently, a case of this variant was confirmed in Sweden, linked to a growing outbreak in Africa.
Kluge noted that focusing on the new clade one strain allows Europe to improve attention on the less severe clade two strain. This includes the crucial steps of offering better public health advice and enhancing surveillance efforts, which are essential for effectively managing the less severe strain.
“About 100 new cases of the clade two mpox strain are now being reported in the European region every month,” added Kluge.
