Egypt and Sudan Strengthen Cooperation Amidst Crisis

Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity, Nevine El-Kabbaj, recently held a productive meeting with her Sudanese counterpart, Ahmed Adam Bakhit, at the Ministry of Social Solidarity in the New Administrative Capital. The meeting aimed to discuss Egypt’s unwavering support for Sudan in the face of the ongoing crisis. The discussions highlighted Egypt’s commitment to assisting Sudanese citizens, both within Egypt and in Sudan, and explored avenues for further cooperation.

During the meeting, Minister El-Kabbaj reiterated Egypt’s steadfast support for Sudan and emphasized the country’s efforts in providing assistance to Sudanese citizens affected by the conflict. Egypt has already welcomed over 500,000 Sudanese individuals who have sought refuge from the crisis, in addition to the 4.5 million Sudanese already residing in Egypt. Minister El-Kabbaj specifically highlighted the Egyptian government’s initiatives to support Sudanese families, particularly in Aswan Governorate, where a significant number of Sudanese citizens reside. She commended the work of the Egyptian Red Crescent in offering relief and facilitating the integration of Sudanese individuals into Egyptian society.

Sudanese Minister of Social Development, Ahmed Adam Bakhit, expressed his gratitude for Egypt’s substantial support and acknowledged the challenges faced by Sudan, including a rising poverty rate that has reached 65% due to the ongoing conflict. Bakhit stressed the urgent need for increased aid, including provisions such as tents, food, and medicine. He also highlighted the vulnerability of women and youth affected by the crisis. Bakhit expressed Sudan’s keenness to learn from Egypt’s experience in social protection and poverty reduction, with a particular focus on strengthening social safety nets and activating the labor market. He acknowledged the tangible impact of Egypt’s contributions to Sudanese citizens and their deep appreciation for the support received.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Future Cooperation:

The meeting concluded with an agreement to prepare a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two ministries. The MoU will outline areas of cooperation, including relief efforts for Sudanese citizens in conflict-affected areas, livelihood support projects, training programs, and technical assistance in managing disasters and crises. The Sudanese minister expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and his aspiration to enhance cooperation between the two ministries to benefit citizens during crises and protect and develop local communities.
