Egypt’s Cotton Textile Industry: Threads of Luxury Weave Comeback

News Agencies

Egypt’s textile industry, famed for its exquisite cotton, is weaving a comeback story. After a period of dominance by other producers, Egypt reclaims its rightful place as a global cotton producer.

This national push centers on empowering the private sector and maximizing Egypt’s natural resources. Acoordingly, the Cotton Research Institute recently introduced six new high-quality cotton varieties (Giza 94 to Giza 98). Walid Yahya, the institute’s deputy director, emphasizes their commitment to supporting farmers through educational workshops across all governorates.

The success of these efforts is evident. A recent Cabinet Media Center report highlights the positive impact on the textile sector. The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) acknowledges the exceptional quality of Egyptian cotton, attributing the country’s legacy of luxury and excellence to this very attribute.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) recognizes the strength of Egypt’s entire textile supply chain, from cultivating cotton to final production, recognizing a significant potential for growth, particularly in secondary textile products.

The International Cotton Advisory Committee echoes this sentiment, commending Egypt’s comprehensive strategy. This strategy focuses on cultivation, trade, and infrastructure development, including modernizing cotton gins and industrial centers.
