NCW Strongly Supports Empowering Women in the Field of Intellectual Property

A respected member of the National Council for Women, Dr. Nesreen Al-Baghdadi, stated that Egypt attaches great importance to supporting the empowerment of women in the field of intellectual property, as the total number of patents issued during the past years to Egyptian men and women surpassed 965, including over 131 for women, and more than 318 patents for women and men together; and women represent approximately 43% of the percentage of researchers in Egypt, and this percentage exceeds international rates.

Al-Baghdadi explained that Egypt is interested in empowering women in science to benefit from their innovations in achieving economic, social, and cultural development and confronting all problems, including environmental problems and the climate change crisis.

She further indicated that the National Council for Women, in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), launched a project to empower women entrepreneurs in local communities through intellectual property, by increasing their awareness of the necessity of protecting the intellectual property of their companies and ideas.

The “Women and Intellectual Property” Committee was formed and is concerned with working on the project, and through it, the council seeks to spread the culture of intellectual property and raise awareness of it and its usefulness. This will reflect positively on encouraging women to innovate in scientific fields as well.

The council also launched a video series entitled “Women Scientists of the Nile,” which aimed to shed light on the role of Egyptian women scientists, their efforts, and their research in various fields of science.

NCW also works to qualify girls to work in the field of information technology and innovation, and to use this technology in various fields in cooperation with Orange Company, which contributes to creating a new generation of girls qualified to find innovative scientific solutions to all the problems and crises facing the world, especially the climate change crisis.

Moreover, the council includes a specialized committee in the field of scientific research, headed by the former Minister of Scientific Research and Council member Dr. Nadia Zakhary.

The committee works to leverage the capabilities and skills of women researchers to market and apply their research by organizing many activities and events, including workshops on empowering rural women in the field of cotton cultivation and harvesting, in cooperation with the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University.

The member of the National Council for Women confirmed that Egypt has also achieved tangible progress in the field of innovation, technological development, and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.

The percentage of female graduates of higher education in Egypt represents 36%, and 48% is the percentage of women in scientific research.

Egypt includes programs and initiatives to encourage women to enter the fields of information and communications technology, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

A multi-service technology portal was also designed for girls and women, and the first investment network was launched to empower women entrepreneurs and increase investment in small startup companies.

Dr. Nesreen stressed that this conference comes under exceptionally difficult circumstances that women, girls, and children are suffering from in the Gaza Strip as a result of the recent Israeli aggression and the collapse of all values ​​and meanings of humanity over more than 120 days. I hope that dear Palestine will enjoy the right to self-determination and the establishment of a state. Palestinian, with Jerusalem as its capital… and that the people of Palestine may enjoy freedom, security, and peace.

Dr. said: Nadia Zakhary explained the reasons for the United Nations designating a day for women and girls in the field of science and the importance of the presence of girls in the field of science.

She also shared some statistics related to Egyptian women in the fields of science and technology, according to the Egyptian Observatory for Science, Technology and Innovation, the Supreme Council of Universities, and the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. She also discussed Reasons why women do not reach decision-making positions.

The National Council for Women participated in the celebration organized by the Misr University of Science and Technology to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in the Field of Science in the presence of Dr. Nesreen Al-Baghdadi, member of the National Council for Women and Dr. Nadia Zakhary, council member and former Minister of Scientific Research.
