After an Egyptian woman suffered an injury in a shark attack yesterday, Egypt’s Ministry of Environment declared that one of the beaches in the well-known Red Sea resort town of Dahab in South Sinai will be temporarily closed.
The victim received urgent medical assistance, and although the ministry did not specify any details of the incident or the extent of the woman’s injuries, it did affirm that her status is currently stable.
As claimed photographs and videos of beachgoers fleeing the area in terror of the shark circulated, word of the shark attack immediately traveled across social media channels.
The attack happened in Dahab’s Laguna Beach, where the victim reportedly lost her left arm after being bitten by a shark.
That incident comes three months after a Tiger shark attack claimed the life of a 24-year-old Russian tourist in the Red Sea city of Hurghada.
According to a statement from the environment ministry, Yasmine Fouad, Minister of the Environment, gave instructions to form a committee to analyze the situation and look into the reasons behind the shark attack.
Heba Matouk, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of the Environment, informed Ahram Online that the government has not yet decided how long the beach will be blocked since the situation is still being evaluated.
Last month, beaches in Dahab were shut down for 24 hours after a video of a shark swimming very close to the shorelines of Dahab’s promenade beach went viral in the middle of August. Once the authorities concluded that the area was safe, they reopened the beaches.
