Women Dominate the Long List for the World Booker Prize

Women writers have dominated the long list for the 2024 World booker Prize, one of the most prestigious literary awards in Britain and the world. This award is given annually for an English-written novel published in Britain and Ireland. Out of the 13 novels that made it to the long list, 8 of them were written by women.

 Samantha Harvey is an English novelist born in 1975 and the author of many critically acclaimed novels. She has been nominated for various literary awards, including two nominations for the Booker Prize for her books “The Wilderness” in 2009 and “Orbital” in 2024.

Harvey is also the author of “All is Song,” “Dear Thief,” “The Western Wind,” and a non-fiction work titled “The Shapeless Unease: A Year of Not Sleeping,” which was shortlisted for the James Tate Black Award, the Women’s Award, the Guardian First Book Award, and the Walter Scott Award. Her novel “The Wilderness” received the Betty Trask Award.

Charlotte Wood, born in 1965, is the author of seven novels and three non-fiction works. In 2016, her novel “The Natural Way of Things” received the Stella Award, the Indie Book of the Year Award, and the Novel of the Year Award.

She also won the Prime Minister’s Literary Prize for fiction. Her next novel, “The Weekend,” became a bestseller worldwide and was shortlisted for the 2020 Stella Prize, the Prime Minister’s Literary Award, and the Australian Literary Society Gold Medal. In 2019, she was appointed a member of the Order of Australia (AM). Additionally, she was recognized as one of the 100 influential women in the Australian Financial Review. Her articles have been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Literary Hub, Sydney Morning Herald, and various other publications.
