UNDP Egypt Prioritizes Women Farmers in Agrifood System Transformation

Egyptian women, while comprising only 21.3% of the official workforce, play a critical role in the country’s agricultural sector. A staggering 71% are actively involved in informal agriculture, often facing low wages, seasonal work, and limited access to resources.

The UNDP Egypt Accelerator Labs Initiative is stepping up to address this disparity. Partnering with the Egyptian Food Bank (EFB), they’re co-designing projects to empower women in agriculture, particularly in areas vulnerable to climate change.

Extensive research, including interviews, surveys, and workshops, has identified key challenges and opportunities. “Future/Foresight Thinking” workshops envisioned scenarios for women in agriculture by 2050.

These findings underscore the importance of gender equality in driving a resilient and green agricultural sector. By partnering with stakeholders and implementing these recommendations, UNDP aims to elevate the role of women in Egyptian agriculture, ensuring a brighter future for all.
