SAWI Project Scales Up Women’s Economic Participation in MENA Region

News Agencies

The MENA region faces a significant challenge in terms of women’s economic participation, with a considerably lower female labor force compared to the global average. This disparity is the result of  deeply ingrained societal and systemic issues, including gender-based violence. These factors collectively hinder women’s access to the job market, leaving them vulnerable to poverty.

This overlooks the diverse needs and ambitions of women in the region. Moreover, such programs can inadvertently push women out of the formal economy, depriving them of essential social security benefits and exposing them to exploitation.

The SAWI Project adopts a multifaceted approach that involves both employers and employees. By collaborating with local organizations and gathering comprehensive data, the project aims to identify barriers to women’s workforce inclusion and develop tailored solutions. The initiative focuses on policy changes, capacity building, and fostering a supportive ecosystem for women’s economic empowerment.

Central to the SAWI Project’s success is the emphasis on data-driven decision-making and the creation of a shared agenda among stakeholders. By collecting and analyzing data on women’s work experiences and employer practices, the project provides a solid foundation for developing effective strategies. Furthermore, the project’s collaboration with universities and other institutions enables a holistic approach to addressing the challenges faced by women in the MENA region.
