The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is officially launching the ‘Women Artisans of Central Asia: A Lookbook Journey’ digital and print publication. This compilation features stunning items produced by 50 Central Asian women artisans of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, showcasing their remarkable craftsmanship to the world and opening new commercial opportunities for their businesses.
Since the Lookbook is digitally accessible worldwide, it will enable the featured craftspeople to grow their respective businesses on a global scale, increasing awareness and appreciation of their craft both locally and internationally.
For generations, national crafts have been a source of beauty, historical record, pride, and identity, shaping a rich heritage and community traditions. In rural regions, women and their families not only contribute to household incomes but also stand as guardians of local, national, and regional history and cultural legacy. They are custodians of age-old traditions, including the intricate arts of carpet and textile weaving, embroidery, silk production, wood carving, metalworking, ceramics, and jewelry making, among other handicrafts.
The ‘Women Artisans of Central Asia: A Lookbook Journey’ publication fosters economic independence, cultural preservation, and gender equality, marking a significant stride towards establishing a more inclusive and prosperous Central Asia. With effective business management and exposure to broader markets, these crafts have the power to substantially increase incomes, enhance education, and significantly improve the lives of rural families, especially benefiting women and girls.
The Lookbook is a collaboration between USAID’s Trade Central Asia activity, the Smithsonian Institution, and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Program, implemented in partnership with the Union of Artisans in Kazakhstan.
In addition to creating the Lookbook, the project team also provided virtual and in-person training on handicraft marketing strategies and the best methods of using the Lookbook to promote craft practices and businesses.
‘Women Artisans of Central Asia: A Lookbook Journey’ is a testament to USAID’s commitment to reducing the gender gap in Central Asia while fostering economic growth, preserving cultural heritage, and empowering women and girls.
Huda Kattan Says She’s Prepared to Risk Her Business for the Palestinian Cause
Huda Beauty’s Founder and Brand Owner, Huda Kattan, posted a video on TikTok recently stating that she will not stop talking about Palestine and that she is willing to risk her entire career over her stance on the Palestinian cause.
In her video, the beauty entrepreneur said, quote: I’m willing to risk my entire business, everything that I have on that. In search of the truth and justice, we have to be willing to do that.
She added: We have to remember that we can’t be afraid to lose anything, we have to trust the process, and we have to trust that if we lose something, something else will come to us the right way because we are doing good work.
After receiving multiple threats pushing her to be silent and basically tone down her pro-Palestine posts, Kattan stressed that she won’t be intimidated because she believes that she’s speaking on behalf of humanity and feels no remorse for highlighting Israel’s invasion of Gaza and the war crimes it continues to commit against Palestinians.
Moreover, Huda criticized the notion that she was being “antisemitic” by talking about innocent people being hurt and stated that she will most definitely keep being vocal about the humanitarian crisis happening in Palestine.
She ended her video with these words: I am more afraid to not speak my truth and to become a coward and a tool of the disgusting system that has allowed too many people to be oppressed for too long. And anybody who tries to get people to be silent for doing good work, you are pro-genocide and you are pro the killing of innocent people.
Over a month ago the beauty mogul released a statement, saying: It’s been a month of immense suffering in Gaza, and unfortunately, things are getting worse. It is important that we always stand on the side of the oppressed and use our platform to shed light on any injustice.

It is worth mentioning that Kattan is one of the few beauty figures who has been vocal on the Gaza crisis, with the industry having had a largely muted response to the war.
She has always been a strong supporter of Palestine, even before the Hamas-Israel war, having previously condemned the illegal displacement of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, back in 2021.
Additionally, in October 2023, she donated US$1 million to Human Appeal and Doctors Without Borders, two humanitarian groups that assist Palestinians who have been displaced as a consequence of Israel’s invasion.

Arab Academy for Science and Technology Inaugurates Mobile Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence “AI” Conference
The Mobile Journalism in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) conference is currently being held in Cairo at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology.
During its two days, a number of academics, chief editors of media and press organizations, and journalists from various Arab nations are taking part in over twenty training workshops and nine discussion sessions. There are 1800 journalists present at the conference.
As one of the new forms of content development created by digital media, the International Mobile Journalism Conference is considered the first of its kind in the Arab world. It will cover topics pertaining to the production of journalistic content via mobile, whether in press websites, media institutions, or through social media platforms.
The first edition of the conference, “Mobile Journalism…Opportunities and Challenges,” was held at Future University last year. It covered a wide range of topics, chief among them being mobile journalism in the era of digital media and press coverage.
The Arab Academy’s president, the dean of Cairo University’s Faculty of Mass Communication, the Egyptian minister of social solidarity, as well as several academics and members of the media from Egypt and the Arab world, attended the opening of the conference.
Palestinian Journalist Superhero Wael Al Dahdouh Nominated for Egyptian Press Freedom Award
According to a statement released by the head of the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate, Khaled El-Balshy, on Sunday, December 17, the Board of Trustees of the Egyptian Press Awards has nominated Palestinian journalist Wael Al Dahdouh for the 2023 Press Freedom Award.
This recognition comes after weeks of covering the ongoing war in Gaza and recognizes his professional contributions and sacrifices. After being absent for several years, the award is being reinstated for the first time.
El-Balshy stated that the organization that bestows awards, the Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate, views this year’s honor as a testament to the Palestinian journalists’ tenacity in the face of Israeli aggression and its “brutal war machine.”
The martyrs of Palestinian journalism were honored by The Syndicate for their role in bringing attention to the “crimes of genocide against the Palestinian people.”
Al Dahdouh’s nomination is a testament to his extraordinary professionalism in the face of losing his home to Israeli bombing and losing his loved ones. Despite losing several family members in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza in October, he kept working.
Furthermore, Al Dahdouh was named Person of the Year by Al-Azhar Voice magazine, which described Palestinian journalists as truth-seeking soldiers.
This acknowledgment is a testament to the work that Palestinian journalists have done in exposing injustices in Gaza and the West Bank and refuting false narratives propagated by mainstream media.
Notably, the Gaza conflict accounted for 72% of the deaths of journalists globally this year. Three Lebanese journalists were martyred in Israeli gunshots near the border between the two countries, along with sixty-one Palestinian and four Israeli journalists.
With 68 journalists slain since the Hamas attack on October 7, the war on Gaza represents the highest number of journalist deaths in a single conflict that the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has tracked since 1990.
