Counselor Amal Ammar, Head of the National Council for Women, has traveled to Muscat, Oman, to participate in two high-level meetings organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). These include the 12th session of the ESCWA Committee on Women and a high-level Arab meeting on the progress made in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action +30, thirty years after their adoption. The meetings, held in partnership with the Arab League and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, will take place on December 8-9, 2024.
The 12th session of the ESCWA Committee on Women will focus on reviewing the progress made in implementing activities related to women’s issues since the previous session in October 2023. This session will be attended by ESCWA’s Secretariat and member states.
The high-level Arab meeting will highlight the achievements of Arab countries and the comprehensive action plan developed by ESCWA and its partners to assess progress in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action +30, thirty years after their adoption.
Counselor Ammar will participate in a session titled “Women and Decision-Making,” as part of the high-level Arab meeting on the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action +30.
Additionally, she will take part in the launch of the annual update of the Gender Justice and Law Matrix, a platform that celebrates legislative advancements in Arab countries concerning gender justice. The event provides an opportunity for countries to share their achievements and will also feature the release of updated reports on gender justice and law. The initiative aims to build momentum, engage stakeholders, and continue improving the “Gender Justice and Law” project, benefiting women’s rights across the region. The event will involve representatives from national women’s mechanisms, national human rights institutions, and civil society organizations participating in the high-level review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
