In the context of the Ministry of Local Development’s ongoing oversight of the tree planting project along the Ring Road and key traffic arteries within the Greater Cairo area (Cairo, Giza, Qalyubia), as part of the Presidential Initiative to plant 100 million trees, Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development, announced the commencement of a tree coding initiative for all planted trees along the Ring Road in Cairo and Giza.
This step reflects the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the success and sustainability of the initiative. The primary aim is to protect the trees from illegal activities and facilitate maintenance processes such as regular follow-ups, pruning, and care. Through this initiative, the Ministry seeks to guarantee the maximum environmental benefits and long-term urban sustainability of the project.
Dr. Awad directed the Strategic Management and Local Development Sector at the Ministry to intensify efforts to plant additional trees along suitable areas within the Ring Road and major traffic arteries in Greater Cairo. The Ministry is coordinating with the Cairo and Giza Cleanliness and Beautification Authorities, as well as the Agriculture Directorates in the targeted governorates to ensure the continuous monitoring and protection of the newly planted trees. This includes collaborating with water and sanitation companies to ensure the availability of water resources.
Dr. Manal Awad emphasized that the project’s future plans involve expanding the tree planting efforts to cover all available areas, with a particular focus on the Ring Road and major corridors within Greater Cairo. Additionally, the initiative will concentrate on planting more trees in public spaces and urban voids to maximize environmental and aesthetic benefits. The project will also promote the use of sustainable irrigation techniques, including utilizing treated wastewater to ensure the sustainability of water resources.
The Minister noted that some areas in Qalyubia Governorate have already been identified for planting, and the trees are being procured and prepared for planting in collaboration with the local authorities.
Dr. Awad confirmed that the project will contribute to a range of key objectives, including supporting Egypt’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, mitigating the effects of climate change by increasing the plant cover, improving the urban environment, and enhancing the aesthetic quality of cities. Additionally, the project aims to raise the quality of life in Greater Cairo by expanding green spaces, improving public health through reduced pollution, and increasing oxygen levels.
Among the project’s additional goals are the prevention of soil erosion, enhancing soil quality, reducing noise pollution through noise absorption, and fostering community engagement by involving local citizens in the tree planting efforts. The initiative also emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices for tree preservation and regular maintenance.
This ambitious project aligns with Egypt’s environmental and urban development goals, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future for the Greater Cairo region and beyond.
