The Ministry of Finance and JICA signed on Tuesday, March 28, the executive agreement for the latter to fund the introduction of Universal Health Insurance in Egypt with 44 bn yen as a soft loan.

Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stated in June that the number of citizens enrolled in the Universal Health Insurance System had hit 4.5 M since its launching in 2019.

Abdel Ghaffar added that the number of services offered through the system had become 2,941 after adding 90 new ones, including psychiatry, dentistry, dieting, and others.

The vast majority of service providers through the system are public hospitals and healthcare establishments. Yet, 38 private entities joined the system in Port Said and Luxor.

The system is being introduced over phases nationwide, so it’s currently available in Port Said, Luxor, Ismailiyah, South Sinai, Aswan, and Suez.
