Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, highlighted the country’s commitment to tackling the obesity crisis during his speech at the annual conference of the General Authority for Teaching Hospitals and Institutes (GOTHI). Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the significant health and economic challenges posed by obesity, with 40% of Egyptians affected, particularly women, where the figure reaches 49%.
He linked this growing issue to national health initiatives such as “100 Million Health” and the “Malnutrition in Schoolchildren” campaign, which have revealed the widespread nature of the problem and its negative impact on public health. The minister underscored the urgency of addressing obesity to improve individual health and reduce the financial strain on the healthcare system.
Dr. Abdel Ghaffar stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat obesity, aiming to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce the burden on society. This includes not only healthcare interventions but also preventive measures and public awareness campaigns to tackle the root causes of obesity.
