Florika Fink-Hooijer, the Director-General for the Environment of the European Commission, visited Cairo from October 29 to October 31, 2023, to enhance cooperation between the European Union and Egypt regarding environmental issues.
During her stay, the Director-General gave a speech at the opening of Cairo Water Week’s sixth edition, where she emphasized the significance of sustainable water management, especially water reuse, and the nexus approach in managing water, food, and energy ecosystems.
Fink-Hooijer also met with Hani Sweilam, the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, to discuss a joint declaration with Egypt on water partnership and the possibility of creating a “Egypt-Europe Water Platform (EEWP),” a high-level policy dialogue platform. The forum seeks to encourage water policy dialogues, collaborative research, and business opportunities based on mutual interests and joint funding.
Director-General Fink-Hooijer expressed her delight regarding the continuation of a constructive dialogue and collaboration between the EU and Egypt in a strategic area of the environment. On many topics such as biodiversity, water, circular economy, waste, and plastic, the two parties share the same objectives, and they will work closely together towards finding solutions.
