As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025, the global dialogue continues to emphasize the importance of gender equality, not only as a moral imperative but as a fundamental requirement for stronger, more resilient democracies. This year, the focus on women’s empowerment takes a particularly critical turn towards security and defence, underscoring the indispensable role women play in shaping peaceful, secure, and inclusive societies.
In line with this vision, the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Korea will host an event on March 7, 2025, titled “Towards More Resilient and Secure Democracies: Women in Security and Defence.” This event, marking the occasion of International Women’s Day, will bring together thought leaders, practitioners, and advocates from across the security and defence sectors to discuss the pivotal role of women in building and maintaining peace.
A Global Imperative for Security and Inclusion
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day emphasizes women’s crucial role in security and defence as a key element in creating more resilient societies. As gender inequality continues to persist across many sectors, the role of women in the security and defence community remains an area of untapped potential. The EU-RoK partnership, formalized in November 2024, places a clear focus on the inclusion of women in peace-building, conflict prevention, and post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
The Role of the EU in Advancing Women’s Leadership in Security
As part of the European Union’s ongoing efforts to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), the EU has prioritized integrating gender perspectives into its Common Security and Defense Policy.
The EU Delegation to Korea’s event on March 7 will provide a platform for discussing concrete actions aimed at empowering women to take on leadership roles across all areas of security and defense. This is not only about gender equity—it is about strengthening the foundations of peace and prosperity for future generations.
Highlighting the Importance of Gender Inclusivity in Security
The event will feature a range of accomplished women speakers from diverse security and defence backgrounds. They will share their experiences and insights on how women can contribute to conflict prevention, peace-making, and post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
The discussions will not only reflect on the experiences of women but also explore how gender equality and human rights perspectives can be integrated into actionable policies that advance women’s roles in security and defence. The goal is to create sustainable pathways for women to actively participate in shaping their security environments, addressing challenges, and driving positive change across borders.
A Collaborative Effort Towards a Secure Future
This event follows the EU-RoK’s continued efforts to strengthen their partnership in the security and defence sectors. The ongoing collaboration between the two regions aims to foster stronger international ties, promote shared values, and emphasize the importance of gender equality in achieving long-lasting peace and security.
The 2025 International Women’s Day event in Seoul is a step forward in realizing this vision—one where women are central to the efforts of building more resilient, secure democracies.
