Environment Minister Announces the Establishment of African Climate Change Center in Cairo

On Sunday, Egyptian Minister of State for Environmental Affairs Yasmine Fouad virtually met with Nardos Bekele Thomas, the Executive Director of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).

According to the government’s website, both parties discussed enhancing cooperation, particularly in launching the African Centre of Excellence on Climate Change Resilience and Adaptation (ACECCRA) in Cairo.

Minister Fouad expressed her hopes for strengthening cooperation with AUDA-NEPAD shortly to develop a roadmap for establishing the center and launch it within this year.

During the discussion, the Minister and Thomas addressed funding sources and the resource management strategy for the center. They also discussed the action plan to accelerate the center’s establishment.

The Minister expressed her anticipation of visiting AUDA-NEPAD’s headquarters later this month to coordinate the procedures for establishing the center and identify its basic needs and procedures for the future.

Thomas, in turn, expressed hopes for increased cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs to support the center’s role in strengthening adaptation and resilience efforts in Africa.
