The Sultan Al-Muayyad Hospital in Souq Al-Silah in Cairo underwent development and was inaugurated by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities on Monday. As part of the Integrated Management of Cultural Tourism (IMCT) project, the development involved several archaeological sites in Fatimid Cairo.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy highlighted that the Al-Muayyad Sheikh Hospital in historic Cairo is a significant living heritage area listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. He emphasized the unique and diverse collection of antiquities in the area, which mirrors Egypt’s rich civilization and maintains its cohesive urban design.
According to Sada El Balad the project, a collaboration between the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to preserve Egyptian cultural heritage and offer a distinct and original tourist experience.
It also concentrates on historic Cairo and Luxor, establishing a sustainable approach to managing cultural tourism sites. The project strives to strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors and streamline regulatory frameworks, as well as develop partnership models to encourage private sector investment in cultural tourism sites.
Additionally, the project aims to enhance and promote cultural tourism experiences for the benefit of local communities and to boost tourism revenues. Over the years, the US government has invested more than $100 million in safeguarding Egypt’s cultural heritage and ensuring that local communities reap the benefits of the growing tourism industry.
Furthermore, USAID is working in collaboration with the Egyptian government to safeguard crucial archaeological sites from rising groundwater levels and promote sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices.
