In continuation of the Ministry of Justice’s work alongside the United Nations Regional Office on Drugs and Crime for the Middle East and North Africa, the secured area for women victims of violence in the East Alexandria Court was opened last Monday after completing its technical preparation and supplying it with the necessary technical communication devices following the best international standards and requirements established for the protection of women’s rights and combating gender-based violence.
At the opening, which supervised by Major General Mohamed Al-Sharif, the Governor of Alexandria, a group of advisors to the Ministry of Justice, and Mrs. Christina Albertin, the regional representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime for the Middle East and North Africa, Counselor Omar Marwan, the Minister of Justice, was represented by the Assistant Minister of Justice for the affairs of the General Authority for Court Buildings and the Assistant Minister of Justice for Human Rights, Women and Children Affairs.
The inauguration represents a distinguished initiative in ensuring the joint commitment to protecting women and girls victims of violence. It also highlights the commitment of the parties concerned to create an environment in which the rights of victims are preserved to the maximum degree, and work is being done to disseminate and implement the safe zone model in other courts in Egypt, to find a comprehensive approach that guarantees the protection, dignity, and fair treatment of women in legal proceedings.
It is worth noting that the secured area designated for women who are victims of violence provides a safe spatial space where the victim remains throughout the court hearing away from any negative influence as a result of her direct contact with the trial procedures or pressure from opponents to prevent any of the causes of secondary abuse or trauma. The secured area also works to provide the necessary safe space for prosecution witnesses to ensure they are not exposed to any threat.
