Peru’s Diego Elias and Egypt’s Nouran Gohar have been crowned the 2023-24 CIB PSA World Champions after they overcame Mostafa Asal and Nour El Sherbini, respectively, on an emotional finals night at Cairo’s National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.
After reaching her fourth consecutive final, the 26-year-old Gohar finally clinched her maiden World Championship crown.
Gohar showcased her resilience and skill during the intense 81-minute battle, prevailing over El Sherbini with a final score of 3-1 (11-8, 9-11, 11-7, and 11-5).
El Sherbini’s defeat prevented her from claiming an eighth PSG World Championship trophy, which would have equaled the record set by retired Malaysian star Nicol David.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been emotional like this before. Usually I show very little emotion but this means so much. I kept on saying that I don’t want stop until I’m World Champion and I can’t really believe it,” Gohar said after the game.
“Nour reached the final 10 times and that’s an unbelievable achievement for her. Beating her in the final of the World Championships is an amazing thing. I’m so speechless right now. All respect to her but I can’t really believe it,” she added.
