Minister of Health Spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar stated in media comments on Sunday that there have been no reported cases of monkeypox in Egypt.

He also mentioned that Egypt does not have endemic monkeypox. According to him, the common symptoms of monkeypox include a rash, high temperature, sore throat, muscle pain, back pain, and swollen lymph nodes.

He advised that anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek medical examination at the nearest fever hospital. Additionally, the spokesman confirmed that Egypt is not facing a cholera epidemic.

On August 15, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency of international concern due to the growing monkeypox outbreak, mainly centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The announcement, made by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, indicates the highest alert level under the International Health Regulations.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been dealing with monkeypox for over a decade, with case numbers steadily increasing each year.

The situation has significantly worsened over the past year, surpassing the total number of cases reported in 2021, with over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths reported so far.
