Yesterday, Egypt’s Ambassador in Berlin, Khalid Galal, received over 40 smuggled Ancient Egyptian artifacts from Germany.
Egypt received the smuggled artifacts following the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
Carsten Wilms, the Cultural Officer for the Middle East and Africa at the German Foreign Ministry handed the artifacts to the Egyptian embassy in Berlin. Authorities at Frankfurt Airport seized the smuggled artifacts.
Honorably, Egypt is now a signatory to the convention that urges States Parties to take measures to prohibit and prevent the illicit trafficking of cultural property.
