Egyptian Antiquities Museums to Allow Free Entry for Egyptians on May 18th to Mark International Museum Day

In honor of International Museum Day, all antiquities museums in Egypt affiliated with the Supreme Council of Antiquities will be open for free to Egyptian visitors on May 18th.

Mohamed Ismail Khaled, the esteemed Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, has announced that this initiative is a strategic move by the museum sector to actively participate in local and international heritage and cultural events.

The event aims to foster a deeper understanding of archaeology, culture, and tourism among all visitors, regardless of age or social background. On this particular day, visitors can avail of free guided tours, offering a unique opportunity to explore the rich archaeological collections in each museum.

International Museum Day has been organized annually by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) since 1977. Its purpose is to unify museums’ aspirations and creative efforts worldwide and educate the public about their activities through events and seminars that highlight their role in society.

Each year, International Museum Day is themed, this year’s being “Museums for Education and Research.” The theme emphasizes the importance of museums in providing a comprehensive educational experience.
