Egypt to Use AI to Combat Customs Evasion in Ports

Mona Yousef

Egypt will implement cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to combat customs evasion at its ports, according to a government official . The new system aims to enhance customs performance and provide more precise monitoring of imported goods movement. The AI-driven initiative will be tested initially at Egyptian ports, with full implementation expected within six months.

AI System to Standardize Prices and Reduce Manipulation

The new AI system will leverage advanced technology to collect accurate data on the prices of imported goods from global suppliers. This data will help in accurately determining prices and standardizing them across all Egyptian ports, thus minimizing price discrepancies that have previously occurred.

The official explained, “The new system will standardize price publications across all Egyptian ports, ensuring no variations or errors in price estimation. This change will significantly protect the national treasury and reduce manipulation.”

Unified Database for Enhanced Transparency and Monitoring

One of the key components of the new system will be the creation of a unified database for imported goods’ prices. This will ensure that the same price is applied at all ports in Egypt. Currently, there are discrepancies in the customs valuation of the same product between different ports, leading to potential errors or manipulation in customs assessments.

AI-Driven Surveillance for Improved Transparency and Accuracy

This initiative is part of Egypt’s broader effort to strengthen monitoring at customs points using AI technology, ensuring that no fraudulent practices or smuggling activities take place. It also aims to streamline customs procedures by accelerating transactions and reducing disparities in customs assessments between ports, fostering greater accuracy and transparency.

Increase in Customs Revenue and New Hiring Plans

Egypt’s customs revenue has surged in the first half of the fiscal year, rising by 50% year-on-year to reach 62.69 billion EGP, marking an increase of 20.89 billion EGP compared to the same period last year.

The official also revealed that the government plans to hire 1,500 new customs officers, who will be distributed across the country’s ports most prone to smuggling activities, such as Port Said, Safaga, and Salloum. This move is aimed at improving inspection effectiveness and reducing smuggling operations in these critical areas.

A New Era of Customs Control in Egypt

The implementation of AI in Egypt’s customs system marks a significant advancement in the country’s efforts to modernize and improve the efficiency of its ports. By using AI to standardize pricing, increase transparency, and reduce manipulation, Egypt is setting a new standard for customs control. The new system is expected to substantially enhance the accuracy and fairness of customs processes, ultimately contributing to the protection of the national economy and the safeguarding of state revenues.

With these measures in place, Egypt is poised to make considerable strides in combating customs evasion and improving the overall efficiency of its customs procedures. This forward-thinking approach not only ensures enhanced revenue collection but also supports Egypt’s goal of a more transparent, secure, and accountable import-export system.
