Egypt Submits First BTR Report, Ranked second on GERMAN WATCH Report

News Agencies

Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, announced that the country recently submitted its first-ever Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) to the UN Climate Change Secretariat. This groundbreaking report includes critical data on emissions reductions achieved, revealing that Egypt has successfully met its 2024 emissions reduction target in the energy sector. Additionally, the country surpassed its transport sector emissions reduction goal by 12%. Dr. Fouad praised the tremendous efforts made by experts to prepare the report within a short timeframe.

The Minister also highlighted two key events from the previous month that further strengthen the connection between climate change and the green transition. Under Egypt’s commitment to reducing emissions—largely caused by developed nations—and executing its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Egypt secured second place in the Arab world and North Africa in the GERMAN WATCH report, which evaluates the climate situation in 65 countries. The country also ranked 10th globally for its efforts in achieving its renewable energy targets and consistent climate policies in practice.

During the National Environment Day celebrations, Dr. Fouad reaffirmed that Egypt’s green transformation will not be possible without community participation and an inclusive societal dialogue. To this end, the new government has been proactive in organizing several community dialogue sessions across various governorates, engaging different segments of society, including government entities, civil society, youth, academics, and unions. These sessions are part of the effort to ensure effective and genuine involvement in environmental issues, as Egypt works to protect its natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for future generations.
