The Egyptians were so riled up by Netflix’s ‘Queen Cleopatra’ docuseries. Hence, a group of young Egyptians launched a campaign against Netflix’s depiction. Casting a dark-skinned actress, Netflix falsified Egyptian history and promoted Afrocentrism.
In response, Egyptian youth launched a counter-campaign with the hashtag #مصر_للمصريين (Egypt for Egyptians) on Twitter. In the campaign, young Egyptians shared half and half-face photos online. comparing the faces from within the photos, they were evidently showing a high level of similarity. They showed that the ancestors and descendants shared the same facial features.
Cleopatra’s physical appearance and beauty have long been at the forefront of her legacy, and her physical appearance was often mentioned by artists and writers such as Shakespeare and early Greek scholars, who described her beauty in their poetry and writings. Ancient artwork, on statuary and coins, depicted her as plain, with a Ptolemaic ‘Greek’ nose.
