The Ministry of Environment recently launched the National Environment Day celebrations for 2025, under the theme “Sustainable Green Egypt: Towards a Circular Economy and Just Green Transition.”

The event brought together Dr. Yasmin Fouad, Minister of Environment; Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development; and Dr. Ayman Abu Hadeed, Chairman of the Advisory Committee to Support the Afforestation Program.

The celebration included the presentation of a new guideline created by the Advisory Committee to Support the Afforestation Program, as well as the signing of several protocols aimed at advancing the country’s environmental efforts. The gathering also highlighted the Presidential Initiative for planting 100 million trees.

Dr. Abu Hadeed, former Minister of Agriculture and Chairman of the Afforestation Support Committee, reminded attendees that Egypt celebrates National Environment Day on January 27 each year, marking the anniversary of the issuance of the first environmental protection law in Egypt (Law No. 4 of 1994). This law was a pivotal moment in the country’s environmental protection efforts, laying down a clear legislative framework for the conservation of natural resources and the enhancement of the role of various agencies in safeguarding the environment.

In her remarks, Dr. Manal  expressed her happiness at participating in the National Environment Day celebration for 2025, emphasizing the importance of the theme “Sustainable Green Egypt: Towards a Circular Economy and Just Green Transition.” She highlighted the ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture, and local governorates in the 100 Million Trees Initiative.

Dr. Awad noted that the advisory committee had recommended the creation of a guiding manual, which would serve as a system for implementing the afforestation plan. She added that the manual would be distributed to the governorates, offering a framework to determine the appropriate types and quantities of trees based on the specific climatic and soil conditions of each region.

She, further, explained that the afforestation efforts had already begun along the Ring Road, and once complete, the area would be formally classified and coded. Dr. Awad stressed that the 100 Million Trees Initiative is crucial for the wellbeing of Egypt’s citizens, ensuring a better quality of life for the Egyptian people.

In this regard, Dr. Abu Hadeed also shared that the committee had been working on creating a comprehensive guide to support the Presidential Afforestation Initiative. This initiative is part of Egypt’s larger vision to achieve a greener and more sustainable future.
