Egypt has expressed its strong support for the United Nations Secretary-General’s recent decision to appoint Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi as his special envoy on water. This appointment marks a significant milestone in Egypt’s efforts to promote sustainable water management and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a statement released on Saturday, the Egyptian foreign ministry emphasized that this new role is a direct result of Egypt’s successful advocacy, alongside Germany, during the 2023 UN Water Conference. The campaign garnered support from 151 countries, underscoring the global need for a dedicated envoy to address water-related challenges.

Egypt and Germany’s advocacy was for  bolstering member states’ efforts to achieve the SDGs, particularly Goal 6, which focuses on sustainable water management and access to safe water and sanitation.

The Egyptian foreign ministry expressed its anticipation of fruitful collaboration with Marsudi to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda, highlighting Egypt’s own commitment to rational water resource management and cross-border cooperation.

As the UN’s special envoy on water, she will serve as a champion and high-level advocate, raising water issues to the forefront of the political agenda both within and outside the United Nations.
