The EFG Foundation for Social Development (EFG Foundation), a non-profit organization committed to sustainable, high-impact development initiatives, has completed two transformative projects aimed at improving dialysis care at Minia University Hospital. These projects, executed in partnership with Minia University, address the region’s critical shortage of dialysis services, ultimately benefiting hundreds of patients in the Minia governorate, including both children and adults.
Recognizing the acute need for pediatric dialysis services in the region, the EFG Foundation embarked on a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the pediatric dialysis ward at Minia University Hospital. This initiative followed a devastating fire that severely damaged the facility, leaving numerous children without access to life-saving dialysis treatment. The Foundation’s efforts included restoring the damaged areas, adding a new ward, and converting previously unused spaces into fully functional dialysis treatment areas.
The project also involved significant upgrades to the hospital’s equipment, with the Foundation replacing destroyed dialysis machines, repairing those that were salvageable, and installing additional new dialysis units. The improvements extended to the facility’s overall infrastructure, including the introduction of ICU beds, ventilators, monitors, laboratory equipment, and specialized pediatric dialysis beds. Furthermore, safety was enhanced through the installation of a modern fire safety system.
As a result of these enhancements, the pediatric dialysis ward’s capacity increased significantly, enabling the hospital to accommodate up to 107 additional children per month and expanding annual dialysis sessions by approximately 15,330. The ward also underwent aesthetic improvements, with a mural painted by the children of EFG Foundation employees, offering an uplifting environment for patients and medical staff alike.
In this regard, Mona Zulficar, Chairperson of EFG Holding and the EFG Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to healthcare access for all. “At EFG Foundation, we believe healthcare is a fundamental right. Through our initiatives, we aim to ensure that medical infrastructure is enhanced, and access to critical treatments like dialysis is expanded—especially in underserved communities. Our partnership with Minia University Hospital is a testament to our dedication to sustainable healthcare solutions with a lasting impact.”
On the other hand, Hanaa Helmy, Group Chief Sustainability Officer of EFG Holding and CEO of the EFG Foundation, commented on the success of the project: “Our goal was not just to restore essential services but to elevate the quality of care for children suffering from chronic kidney disease. With these upgrades, we are able to provide better outcomes and bring hope to young patients in Minia.”
Building on the success of its pediatric initiative, the EFG Foundation also expanded its efforts to address the growing demand for adult dialysis services in Minia. The Foundation has established a state-of-the-art dialysis facility at the hospital, equipped with seven new dialysis machines. This expansion will provide an additional 7,644 dialysis sessions annually and significantly reduce patient waiting times.
In addition, the hospital’s infrastructure was further upgraded with the installation of a modern water pump station to support the increased patient load and a new laboratory designed to improve diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficiency. The adult dialysis ward also received vital renovations, including antibacterial tiling, upgraded air conditioning systems, and an enhanced fire safety system.
Helmy explained, “With over 60,000 dialysis patients in Egypt, a significant portion of whom reside in Minia, investing in healthcare infrastructure is critical. The new adult dialysis ward and the state-of-the-art laboratory will ensure that more patients receive timely, high-quality care, improving their quality of life.”
These initiatives highlight the EFG Foundation’s ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access in underserved communities across Egypt. By enhancing dialysis care at Minia University Hospital, the Foundation has ensured that residents of Minia—one of Egypt’s most vulnerable regions—receive life-saving treatment that is essential for their survival.
