Alexandria’s Tahya Misr Terminal Sets New Standard in Port Efficiency and Connectivity

Alexandria’s  Tahya Misr terminal, which began trial operations in early 2023, has already demonstrated remarkable progress. The facility is equipped with an advanced electronic system that has dramatically reduced container processing times to just 25 minutes, a benchmark unmatched by any other Egyptian port. This rapid processing is crucial in increasing Alexandria Port’s throughput, allowing goods to move quickly through one of Egypt’s busiest trade gateways.

Admiral Abdelkader Darwish, Chairman of the Egyptian Group for Multipurpose Terminals, has praised the facility’s cutting-edge automation, which minimizes human intervention throughout the entire process— from unloading containers to shipping them out. This technological leap not only streamlines operations but also enhances the overall efficiency of Alexandria Port, making it a model of modern logistics management in the region.

In addition to its automation advancements, the Tahya Misr terminal is playing a key role in expanding Egypt’s transport capacity. In January 2024, cargo rail services were launched, connecting Alexandria Port to the Sixth of October Dry Port. This new rail link will further enhance the flow of goods across the country, providing an efficient alternative to road transport and reducing congestion.

Admiral Ahmed Hawash, Chairman of Alexandria Port Authority, highlighted the terminal’s crucial role in increasing cargo handling capacity and improving trade flows. He noted, “The Tahya Misr terminal is not only a major asset for Alexandria Port, but it also contributes significantly to Egypt’s logistics infrastructure, supporting both domestic and international trade.”

The modernization of the Tahya Misr terminal is also a testament to Egypt’s commitment to adopting international best practices in logistics and operations. Alessandro Perotti, Head of Maintenance at the terminal, commended the workers’ dedication to incorporating global expertise and cutting-edge technologies in the terminal’s operations, helping to elevate Egypt’s logistics sector to new heights.
