Egypt’s Wadi El Rayan Protected Area was the focus of a high-level inspection visit this week by Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, alongside Dr. Ahmed El Ansary, Governor of Fayoum. The visit underscored the strategic importance of the reserve as a flagship destination for eco-tourism and a driver of local economic development.
Dr. Awad emphasized that Wadi El Rayan stands out as one of Egypt’s most culturally and ecologically significant reserves, offering a unique mix of natural heritage, biodiversity, and environmental tourism potential.
Enhancing Visitor Experience and Environmental Stewardship
During the visit, the delegation toured key sites within the reserve, including:
- The iconic waterfalls
- The visitors’ center
- Local cafes and service areas
The tour aimed to assess current infrastructure and services, with a focus on improving visitor satisfaction and sustainability. Dr. Awad called for stricter oversight and improved service efficiency across all protected areas, with Wadi El Rayan identified as a priority site due to its high footfall and natural value.

The visit also highlighted the role of private sector engagement and local community integration in preserving the site while boosting socio-economic outcomes.
Dr. Ahmed El Ansary, Governor of Fayoum, emphasized that Wadi El Rayan holds significant potential for community-led development, particularly in Youssef El Seddik district, where the reserve is located.
