Egypt Expands Women’s Mental Health Services as Over 14,000 Cases Treated in 2025

Underscoring Egypt’s commitment to women’s health and well-being, the Ministry of Health and Population has announced the latest achievements of the Women’s Mental Health Unit between January and August 2025. The report highlights the country’s ongoing efforts to provide safe, inclusive, and accessible mental health services to women across all governorates.

Dr. Wessam Aboul Fotouh, Head of the Central Administration of the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, affirmed that the unit plays a vital role in offering mental health services through a network of hospitals and specialized centers affiliated with the Secretariat. These services are not only therapeutic but also preventative, with a focus on documenting cases of social violence and providing psychological and social support to female patients.

During the first eight months of the year, a total of 14,170 cases were received, including 3,254 new cases. Additionally, 184 incidents of violence against women were recorded across 21 hospitals and centers, showcasing the unit’s growing role in both response and intervention. These facilities operate daily and are staffed by multidisciplinary teams—psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers—offering free, comprehensive care, including mental health assessments, family counseling, and violence intervention.

Dr. Aboul Fotouh emphasized that this initiative is part of the national strategy to integrate mental health services into primary healthcare. By doing so, Egypt is actively working toward normalizing access to mental healthcare and ensuring that women have the resources and support they need to lead healthier, more stable lives.

She further noted that the government’s approach aligns with broader national goals to empower women, strengthen family cohesion, and improve community mental health. These efforts reflect a growing understanding that mental well-being is central to societal development.
