Egyptian media personality and writer Germien Amer, member of the General Syndicate of the Egyptian Writers’ Union and the Arab Media Union, has issued a powerful call to action: the creation and implementation of a Professional and Ethical Charter for Influencers and Content Creators across Egypt and the Arab world.
Amer, also a member of the Arab Media Union, outlined her proposal in a compelling opinion article titled “Planet of Influencers – Why Are We Waiting?” In it, she highlights the urgent need to regulate the expanding influence of digital content creators—whose reach now transcends traditional media boundaries and national borders. This, she said, necessitates the establishment of ethical and professional guidelines to regulate such power and protect society from misleading or harmful practices.
Amer reviewed a number of Arab and international models for media and content charters, including the Media Code of Ethics in Egypt and Syria, the Arab Media Honor Code, and regulatory experiences from Qatar. She also referenced advanced regulatory frameworks in countries such as Finland, the United Kingdom, India, France, and Spain, in addition to the guidelines issued by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
She stressed that every day of delay in issuing an Arab charter for influencers and content creators further erodes public trust and opens the door to manipulation and commercial exploitation. Amer warned that time is no longer on our side, and that urgent action is essential to avoid “disasters and crimes that could have been prevented.”
