Egypt’s largest street iftar in the heart of Cairo brought together thousands of residents, creating an unparalleled display of community spirit. Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy was among the thousands gathered in Matariya, a densely populated district, to celebrate the cherished annual tradition of Ramadan’s communal Iftar.
This iftar gathering, a long-standing custom, continues to serve as a powerful symbol of unity, inclusivity, and social solidarity in Egypt. It unites people from all walks of life—ranging from local residents to public officials and celebrities—in a shared celebration of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
A Celebration of Unity and Generosity
This year’s gathering attracted a diverse array of ministers, public officials, celebrities, sports figures, and foreign ambassadors. Everyone came together to partake in the communal meal, making it a truly inclusive event, reflective of the values of Ramadan.
Minister Maya Morsy expressed her joy at participating in such a meaningful occasion, emphasizing the deep-rooted connections and solidarity among Egyptians. “It is an honor to be part of this beautiful occasion that truly represents the spirit of Ramadan—a time when Egyptians stand together in support and kindness,” Morsy remarked.
In her address, Morsy also highlighted the significance of the Bayout Al-Mahrousa initiative, a national campaign aimed at providing 100 million meals during Ramadan. This initiative distributes meals through food centers, directly to homes, and via meal vouchers across Egypt. By helping ensure that families in need can partake in iftar and suhoor, Bayout Al-Mahrousa embodies the values of generosity, support, and community cohesion that are central to the Ramadan experience.
Matariya’s Iftar: A Decade-Long Tradition
Since its inception in 2013, the street iftar in Matariya has grown to become the largest and most renowned Ramadan gathering in Egypt. What began as a local initiative has evolved over the past decade into a symbol of Cairo’s vibrant community spirit.
The event, which takes place every 15th of Ramadan, is entirely funded by the contributions of the local community. It has become a beloved fixture of the neighborhood, promoting unity and goodwill among its residents.
As the tradition of the Matariya iftar continues to grow, it will undoubtedly remain a central gathering point for Egyptians, strengthening the bonds of community and celebrating the enduring spirit of Ramadan.
