In a strategic virtual meeting, Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, and her Jordanian counterpart, Muawia Radaideh, discussed the future direction of the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA). Minister Fouad, as current chair of the Ministerial Council of PERSGA, presented updates on the organization’s ongoing work plan, with a focus on tackling pressing environmental challenges such as climate change, plastic pollution, and sustainable development in the Red Sea region.
The meeting also addressed the critical issue of funding, with Minister Fouad highlighting the successful efforts to increase financial support from member states. This support will be pivotal in driving the organization’s capacity to protect the ecosystems of the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Furthermore, the ministers discussed enhancing PERSGA’s internal structure to meet the growing demands of environmental conservation, including the expansion of its staff and diversifying funding sources through international cooperation agreements.
Minister Radaideh reiterated Jordan’s unwavering commitment to PERSGA’s mission and emphasized the importance of collaboration between Egypt and Jordan in advancing the organization’s objectives. He extended an invitation for Minister Fouad to visit Jordan ahead of the Ministerial Council meeting in February 2025, solidifying their partnership and reinforcing both nations’ shared environmental goals.
This collaboration marks a significant step toward fostering stronger regional environmental leadership and securing the long-term sustainability of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden ecosystems.
