A joint Egyptian-German archaeological mission has made a significant discovery at the ancient site of Athribis in Sohag, Egypt. The team has uncovered a complete Ptolemaic temple pylon, a monumental gateway that once marked the entrance to a grand temple complex.

The pylon, measuring 51 meters wide and potentially reaching 18 meters in height, rivals the dimensions of the famous Luxor Temple pylon. Its facade is adorned with intricate hieroglyphic texts and scenes depicting the deities Repyt and Min, as well as Ptolemaic rulers.

A Glimpse into the Ptolemaic Era

The discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into the Ptolemaic era, a period marked by a fusion of Greek and Egyptian cultures. The Ptolemaic rulers, descendants of one of Alexander the Great’s generals, adopted Egyptian customs and religious practices while introducing Greek influences.

The uncovered pylon, dating back to the reign of Ptolemy VIII, provides valuable insights into the religious beliefs and artistic practices of the time. The intricate details of the hieroglyphic texts and the iconic representations of deities offer a window into the ancient world.

Continuing the Legacy of Discovery

The joint Egyptian-German mission has been working at Athribis for over a decade, uncovering a wealth of archaeological treasures. This latest discovery further solidifies the site’s importance as a significant archaeological site in Upper Egypt.

As the mission continues its work, it is expected to uncover even more secrets of the ancient past, shedding light on the history and culture of one of Egypt’s most fascinating periods.
